OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India) is not Indian citizenship or an Indian passport — it is a lifelong, multiple-entry visa-like status for people of Indian origin living abroad, administered by India's Ministry of Home Affairs through Indian Missions and the OCI Services portal.
Who is eligible
- Children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren of a person who was an Indian citizen on or after 26 January 1950, or who was eligible to become one
- Minor children with at least one Indian-origin parent
- Foreign spouses of Indian citizens or OCI cardholders, after at least 2 years of registered marriage
Applicants are generally not eligible if a parent, grandparent, or great-grandparent was ever a citizen of Pakistan, Bangladesh, or certain other specified countries.
